Suki Wessling combines years of musical and literary exploration into a mode of expression both unusual and accessible. Using texts ranging from ancient to modern, Suki creates improvisational song cycles on a theme, using instruments, voice, and looping software to illuminate the words and meaning of the texts. Listeners will hear echoes of jazz, folk, classical, and avant garde forms woven together into a tapestry of sound that forms the base for thought-provoking words from our greatest authors.
Some musical thoughts:
Raised by a piano teacher mom, I was steeped in music from an early age. We mostly listened to classical music, Catholic church music, and folk (it was the age of 60s Catholic parents listening to Peter, Paul, and Mary!), but then one day my older brother brought home a record of Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy by The Who and our musical lives changed. I have had periods of interest in almost every genre but heavy metal and country & western.
I have played (in order) piano, flute, recorders, harp, oboe, harpsichord, guitar, voice, mandolin, theremin, and melodica. My current jazz performing instruments are voice and flute, and for looping, it’s wide open! My musical interests include looping/electronic, medieval classical, modern classical “new music,” jazz, and random popular styles.
